The Asia Pacific Writing Partnership (APWP) is an international collaboration between universities, literary organizations and individuals interested in new writing from and about Asia and the Pacific, either in the way of promoting writers from the region, conducting research in areas that benefits writing from Asia and the Pacific, or to help nurture excellence in new writing.
The Partnership, which incudes writers, scholars and industry partners in the region’s diverse cultures, explores notions of writing, identity and creative practice through a study of Asia-Pacific literature. Through this engagement, the Partnership offers ways to share information about writers and writing, both in the region’s languages and in literary translation. It supports diversity of cultural expression and literature that crosses borders. It also champions the notion that literature enhances understanding between cultures and will establish forums and conferences to assist this dialogue.
The APWP aims to:
- Enhance the further development of literary exchanges and dialogues on the region’s literatures by conducting research and sharing share resources, with an emphasis on supporting the region’s diverse cultures, languages and creative approaches.
- Help establish systems of literary patronage for Asian and Pacific writers by examining existing support such as grants, translation and publication opportunities, with a view to identifying ways to develop and extend these.
- Support the development of information and scholarship within the region and enhance the opportunities to share the region’s diverse literatures through:
v writing programs
v the study of regional literature outside the region
v literature and writing conferences
v reading series
v literary magazines
v jobs for writers
v new local, regional and international audiences for contemporary literature from the region
v mentorships, writer-in–residence programs, international teaching exchanges for writers, and knowledge sharing.
4. Further promote internationally and locally in the work of writers engaged with the region (including writers not from the region but whose work is of the region).
5. Undertake academic literary research with Partners on writing from the region.
6. Help facilitate create solutions for publishers, translators, booksellers/distributors and agents wanting to better showcase work from the region.
7. Facilitate, encourage and support translations and the sharing of literature in regional languages.
8. Encourage the development of academic courses in contemporary literature from Asia and the Pacific, and impact of globalisation on writing from the region.
